Fashion Dog: Blue of Real Girl Runway

Dashing, no?
Next up in my Fashion Dog series is Blue from Deb of  Real Girl Runway! A 10-year-old Blue Tick, Blue Heeler mix, he was adopted during a pet adoption day at Petsmart. He was very scared and curled in the back of his kennel, but Mommy Liz got him to come to her and it was love at first sight. His sister Anita is a German Short Haired Pointer mix. She's 7 and very very active. He also has a sister cat named Hemingway. They call pups like Blue and Anita and kitties like Hemingway rescues but Deb says, "we think they rescued us."

Describe a typical day in your life.
We get up pretty early. My sister, Anita doesn't let me sleep past 6am. She has to go out for her run. Our moms let us out and feed us. Then we go back to bed and snooze for the rest of the morning. I spend the day with my sisters (dog sister Anita and cat sister Hemingway), while my Moms are gone. I love barking at trucks, especially Fed Ex, UPS and the mail carrier. They might be bringing me something.

My favorite past time is hanging out with my people and being petted. If you aren't petting me, I will talk to you or nudge you until you do. I'm so happy when my Moms get home at night and we can spend time together. We take evening walks and play together after dinner. I'm also a great singer. I love to howl, since I have a bit of hound in me.

On weekends I sleep in with Mom Liz while Mom Deb and Anita blog and play fetch. Summer is my favorite time. We spend time in the backyard running and playing around the pool. Mostly I just chill with my people under the deck awning while they drink cocktails.
Blue and Anita sing together!
Does your mommy ever dress you up?
No, but she says that I remind her of a southern gentleman. If she did dress me up, I'm sure I'd wear a bow tie. Accessories make the outfit, you know.

What summer trends have you panting in anticipation?
I'm loving pastels right now. They are kind of preppy. Color blocking is also cool. My new collar, harness and leash are full of bright colors.

What online sites have the best pet gear?
I like amazon.com because they have a little bit of everything. My favorite local place to shop is Dogman Bakery in Arlington, Virginia. I like fashion but not as much as Mom. I'm more of a foodie and they have the best treats.

What designer or store do you wish made dog clothes & accessories?
I definitely think Ralph Lauren would be my store. I can see myself in a blazer and paisley bow tie. My sister, Anita would shop at Balmain. She's wild and is more of a rocker chick. I also love shoes. I have been known to chew a pair or two. Mom almost passed out when I chewed a pair of her Jimmy Choos. I felt a little bad about it but they were delicious.

Fashion Dog: Spike from Fresh Jess

Next in my fashion dog series is Spike of Fresh Jess! Hes a 4 year old English bulldog adopted from the Bulldog Haven Northwest rescue. He was surrendered after his former parents couldn't afford major surgeries he needed and when they saw him on the Bulldog Haven NW Facebook page - the rest was history!

Describe a day in your life.
On the weekdays, I pretend I'm asleep until Mom & Dad leave for work. Then I eat breakfast, drink some water, play with my toys, hide my bones around the house, mess up my parents' bed, watch some Animal Planet and lay on my bed looking out the window and judging all the human beings that walk by. I go back to bed around 3pm. When my parents come home, it looks like I've been napping all day!

On the weekends I love to go to the dog park and swim in the lake, and just hang with Mom & Dad all weekend long. I try to see my uncles and other human family too, but dog park dates with all of my favorite lady dogs is a must.

Does your mom ever dress you up?
NO. I have what you call a husky build - big shoulders, short & stocky with no neck. I hate clothes because they never fit me :(

If you could pick one designer to make dog gear, who would it be?
Tom Ford. I'm sure he could make the short and stocky look more handsome than we already are.

What's your favorite online boutique to shop for pet accessories?
I make Mom buy all my stuff at Smiley Dog, Pet Pros, and Amazon. I'm a responsible canine - I support Seattle business!

If you could piddle on one fashion trend right now, what would it be?
Piddle's a funny word! I guess I'd have to say Crocs. I will never understand Crocs, humans. They're so easy to piddle on!

Hooray for rescue dogs! Do you know a fashion dog that should be featured next? Let me know!

Fashion Dog: Lucy of A Lacey Perspective

Next in my fashion dog series is Lucy of A Lacey Perspective by Lacey, one of the best DC style blogs and co-founder of CapFabb! Princess Lucille Zoey, also known as Pig, Stinky, and Miss Piggy, is a 10-year-old pug given to Lacey on her sweet 16!

Describe a day in the life of Lucy...
A day in the life of Lucy is simple...

Wake up with mom and watch her get ready for work. Once she is gone find my fav spot on the couch on top of the big pile of pillows (mom calls me her mountain climber pug). Take a nice long nap. Wake up play with my stuffed pig toys for 5 minutes. Go back to sleep.

Wake up when mom walks in and run many, many circle. Go take a quick sip of water. Snuggle (AKA. sit directly on her lap) with her on the couch and watch any of 'The Housewives' on Bravo. While she sips on her wine, I wait for one of the Housewives' dogs to appear on the screen (this is the best part) and keep an eye on dad in the kitchen while he cooks dinner.

I can only take so much 'Housewives' so then I go into the kitchen and wait for dad to drop some food (it happens now and again... don't judge). Then I watch them eat dinner.

Once they are done eating dinner, we as a family watch John Stewart and Steven Colbert. Then off to bed (my fav part of the day).
Does your mommy ever dress you up?
Rarely. If it gets cold out she'll put on my turtleneck or puffer coat (which I am a fan of neither). Oh... and once she put antlers on me for her Ugly Sweater Christmas Party and proceeded to call me her "Christmas Pug" after several glasses of wine.

If you could have one designer make dog clothing, who would it be?
I'm a girly, quirky pug - I would probably go with Kate Spade.

What's your fave place to get dog gear?
Mom's more of an online shopper. She has found some fun stuff on something called... Etsy?
If you could sink your teeth into one pair of shoes this season, which ones would you pick?
Christopher Kane's Two Tone Platform Wedges - Pretty neon colors to look at and good, thick leather to gnaw on.

Let me know you if know of a fashion dog who needs to be interviewed next!

Fashion Dog: Luna of Style Coalition & My It Things

Baroo?
Next up in the Fashion Dogs Interview Series... Luna of Style Coalition and My It Things! Mommy Yuli found this one-year-old Siberian Husky, American Eskimo, Duchshund mix on PetFinder.com last May. Rescued from North Carolina with her two sisters and fostered by a nice family upstate NY, her two sisters got adopted quickly. But Luna was more on the shy side, so no one wanted her.. until Yuli & her forever family saw her - it was love from the first sight! Since then she has quickly adopted to her amazing life in in NYC!
Updating my Facebook!
Describe a typical day in your life:
I spend most of my days at the Style Coalition office, and go to daycare few times a week, where I play with my boyfriends Nike and Luke (keeping my options open). In the evenings I love hanging out with my dog run friends at the Washington Square. On the weekends I like to take a stroll around Soho or invite my weekend boyfriend Gustav to chill on my roof deck. My social calendar tends to get pretty busy.

Does your human ever dress you up?
Yes it gets chilly in NYC, so I got a nice shearling coat, and Gustav sent me matching booties for Christmas.
Chic and warm!
What designer's upcoming collection has you panting in anticipation?
My style is more on the classy side, so I don't really follow trends and runways.

Where do you shop?
I'm a digital savvy pup, so Wag.com is my fav shopping destination!

If you could piddle on one fashion trend you hate, what would it be?
Slogan tees! Who likes being a billboard? Not classy..
Nose kiss with Gustav!

Fashion Dog: Bradley of What I Wore: Tip to Toe

Next up in my Fashion Dogs series is a local pooch, Bradley "Superstar"! Owned by DC blogger Brea of What I Wore: Tip to Toe, he and Kyoko should definitely have a play date soon, don't you think??

What breed are you?
I'm a Westie (West Highland White Terrier)

Describe a typical day in your life!
In the morning I take a walk around the neighborhood. I usually run around the playground while Brea takes photos for her blog then she goes off to work and I take a nap on her bed (shhh don't tell I'm not actually allowed on the furniture) I typically spend the rest of the day lounging around, watching TV (I love anything with horses- old black and white Western movies are my favorite) and waiting for Brea to come home. If it's Thursday I go to my puppy playgroup.
honkshu
Does your human ever dress you up?
I have a signature look for each season; FALL: I wear cable knit sweaters; WINTER: I wear my puffy parkas from the discontinued dog line at Old Navy; SPRING: I wear bright colored polo shirts; SUMMER: I go au naturel!

What designer do you wish made dog gear?
I'm a huge fan of Burberry Prorsum and I'd love to wear one of the limited edition coats from Christopher Bailey's Fall 2011 menswear line.

If you could piddle on one fashion trend you hate right now, what would it be?
Belted outerwear has GOT TO GO! Skinny belts worn on the outside of cardigans, wide leather belts worn on the outside of wool coats... I'm just not that into it!
What a total cutie, don't you think??? But don't tell Bradley I'm wearing a belted sweater right now :O Check out his Twitter account @MochaMuttsDC!

Let me know if you have a fashionable doglet to be featured next!!

Fashion Dogs: Henry & Gigi of Wendy Brandes

The second installment in my Fashion Dog interview series!! I knew I had to highlight the ever lovely Wendy Brandes' pooches next, Henry & Gigi, who are featured on her blog so often I feel like we're besties! Plus, how could you resist those faces??

Gigi on the left, Henry on the right
What breed(s) are you?
Henry: Pekingese.
Gigi: Everyone thought I was a Pekingese mix, but I'm a Tibetan spaniel.

Does your human ever dress you up?
Henry: Once in a while, when it's raining very hard, she puts a coat on me. But coats are very confusing. I forget how to do any of my business, sit down and look bewildered.
Gigi: I have a pink turtleneck for exceptionally cold winter days, but my beautiful blonde fur usually keeps me warm.

Where do you love to shop?
Henry: I "shop" for barely edible items in the garbage on the sidewalk.
Gigi: I would like to go to Bergdorfs, but Mom keeps saying stuff about "bad behavior" and "fightis with other dogs." Apparently, those things are holding me back socially.
Henry & Gigi pose with Wendy's new Prada purse!
What designer do you wish made dog gear?
Henry: No designer should ever make confusing dog coats. EVER!
Gigi: Mom is a jewelry designer and she hasn't made me any diamond anythings! Can you imagine?

What one pair of shoes do you wish you could chew on right now?

Henry: Do shoes taste like meet?
Gigi: When I want to chew, I chew on Henry.

Gigi makes a good point, there is a lack of WendyB jewel-encrusted dog collars in our lives!! Thanks Henry and Gigi for taking to time to chat with me, and, of course, Wendy, for being awesome.

Fashion Dogs: Kyoko of Fasshonaburu

I'm launching a new series: Fashion Dogs!!

I've made friends with many fashion bloggers over the years and one thing that's stood out to me is how many of them have a beloved pooch that often makes cameos on their site, and sometimes even have their own Facebook pages and Twitter accounts! It's obvious that fashionistas love their doggies and I think it's about time we learned a little more about them!

First up I'll test the waters with my own baby, Kyoko!

I love hats just like my mommy!
What breed are you?
I'm a drop-earred papillon, also known as a phalĆØne. Papillon means "butterfly" in French and the breed was named for the fringy ears. In French, phalĆØne means "moth" - how fabulous is that??? My mommy's imaginary fashion label is named PhalĆØne! We're a toy breed usually under 10 lbs known for being intelligent, gentle and needy!
This will be the perfect Christmas card!
Does your human ever dress you up?
Sometimes when it gets very cold out, she puts me in a sweater my aunt Alex knitted! I also have a leopard print Snuggie, me-ow!

Where do you love to shop?
Online pet boutiques always look so terrible, like they were made in the early '90s and haven't been updated since! I like to shop stores that have pet departments, like Saks Fifth Avenue and ModCloth.
Could you scootch that a bit closer?
What designer do you wish made dog gear?
I would love it if Diane von Furstenberg made pet items, she has great prints that would look lovely on bowls and beds. And I bet Balenciaga would make amazing collar sets with great hardware details and sculptural shapes!

If there was one pair of shoes you wish you could chew on right now, what would it be?
I initially thought maybe the Mui Mui glitter pumps everyone went gaga over in early fall, but now I think I'd rather sink my teeth into these Thakoon ankle boots! Black & white Afrian-inspiraed paisley print?? Nommy in my tummy!!

Let me know if you know of a fashion dog to be featured next!

Lizzie Fortunato Jewels Trunk Show

Over the weekend I stopped by a trunk show at MulƩh, a DC lifestyle boutique that sells furniture and women's clothing, including brands like 3.1 Philip Lim and MM6 Martin Margiela. The show was Lizzie Fortunato Jewels, run by twin sisters Lizzie and Kathryn Fortnato. Lizzie is the designer, and her sister runs the business end - it's left brain / right brain in action!!

I was tres excited to speak to the twins, as LFJ has done collaborations with Fasshonaburu faves VPL and Suno! Their designs have been edgy without being obvious - no spikes or claws needed to convey badass here!
Their fall collection was inspired by Native American motifs and patterns and the rugged frontierswoman and explorer, Isabella Bird. She was an 18th century natural historian who came to America and explored the Rocky Mountains on horseback. "I love this idea of this independent woman who was a little bit defiant - she refused to ride side saddle as women then were supposed to," says Lizzie. That defiant pioneer woman and "natural, really organic influences" were what shaped this beautiful collection!"
"It wasn't about being bohemian, it was about being strong with these very rich, almost historical references."
This crescent moon collar, called Moonlight Mile, was definitely my favorite piece! The twins were like, "You can wear the moons forward or at the nape of your neck," and I was like, "Why would you hide your moons???" I stand by that statement :P
Lizzie launched the business  in 2007 and her sister, Katherine, joined full-time in 2010. In September 2010, the line was one of 18 highlighted by Harper's Bazaar and the CDFA during NY Fashion Week.
They just recently expanded in leather good like clutches, iPad and card cases. "Really taking the inspiration of a lot of the hand beading that we did in jewelry and saying, 'If we can do this in a necklace than why can't we do it in another leather accessory.'"
Looking back at these pictures I'm sad I didn't buy myself something!! Luckily for me , you can find their pieces online at ShopBop, Kirna Zabete and Chain and Charm!

A Chat With Tina Tang

I've chosen my wedding band!! I've decided to go with the Tina Tang Fantasy Forest Ring, which looks beautifully organic:
Of course my ring finger on my left hand is ridiculously small, so I had to contact the Tina Tang herself about getting one that would fit! She was so super sweet that we ended up doing an impromptu interview!!
How did you get your start?
I've been making stuff with may hands since I was 7. I made stickers back then, made my prom dress in High School, and started making jewelry while working at Goldman Sachs (as an equities trader).

Do you have any formal training?
I have taken jewelry classes at the YWCA from actual jewelers but no college degree in jewelry design. I have a GIA Diamond degree which I got a couple years ago.Where do you get your inspiration form?
My inspiration comes from things I want to wear and the working woman who wants to treat herself to something wonderful within a reasonable budget.

What is your design process?
1 Sketch designs: Many sketches don't make it to the next step.
2. Carve in wax
3. Make mold of my wax
4. Cast into sterling silver or gold
Do you have a favorite piece you've designed?
This changes all the time. The newest piece is my new favorite. Lately I have been wearing my Minatour Horn necklace all the time.

What type of woman embodies your brand's style?
My customer is in her late 20's - early 40's and she is a working woman who likes fashion but is not a slave to it. She normally shops at J. Crew, Banana Republic and wants a classic stylish piece that is a little different. She likes getting compliments on her jewelry.

What's next for your business?
Growing more online and doing more nation wide trunk shows! Definitely check out Tina Tang's jewelry, which you can buy online, check out her blog and follow her on Twitter at @TinaTangJewelry.

Interview With Christina of Decades Past

I met Christina of Profresh Style last fashion week, during Fashion's Night Out! She was super sweet and so when I heard that she was opening her own vintage boutique online, Decades Past, I jumped at the chance to ask her a few questions.

Having been a fashion blogger since 2009, it's obvious that you have a deep love of style! What made you decide to open a vintage boutique online?

I think it was about people coveting the things I loved and wanting to share with them our finds. It makes me so happy to have the ability to sell to people my favorite finds and pieces I've been wearing in my blog posts. It was important to me to start my business online since my entire "career" in blogging revolves around the web. It was a beautiful transition. You opened your store with a friend, do either of you have prior experience? Were there any surprises or unexpected items to deal with now that you're you've moved from vision to actuality?

I've been managing retail stores since I was 19 so I've got experience managing. Then, last year I was in the process of buying the retail store I managed when the deal fell through. That sparked me on a rampage to conquer my dream of owning my own business. Now, it's finally here. I'll speak for myself when I say that the biggest surprise was handling paypal. I mean, I've shopped using my paypal account online but learning how to accept payments was definitely a challenge. Everything else, I pretty much prepared myself for. Running a website, managing current content, etc. was something I already did with Profresh Style. The transition was fairly easy. Although, the stress levels hit max at some points.Where do you get the clothing from? Do you have any tips for finding vintage treasures?

We get our clothing from all over the place. It's usually thrift shops in the bay area or on our travels as well as estate sales. Have you ever been? Talk about treasures! My biggest tips would have to be:

-Understand what your "look" is. You may be looking at a shoulder-padded over-sized floral blouse but with the right accessories and key pieces in your wardrobe, you'll be able to visualize how it can be incorporating into your closet.
-Don't underestimate the simple pieces. A simple silk blouse can really be a great addition into your wardrobe and instead of paying $60, you're paying 3 times less.
-Don't be overwhelmed. Conquer it one row/rack at a time. What are your goals for 2011?

My goals for 2011 are to just live my life. I stressed too much last year and overwhelmed myself. Now, I'm just living my dreams but this time, I'm breathing. As far as what I want to accomplish, I hope to get my career off the ground, transform my blog into more than just a blog and have a very successful shop.

Thanks Christina for these great insights and be sure to check out her store... wait, can I call dibs on some things first?

NOVA Fashion Week - Ra'mon-Lawrence

You may remember Ra'mon-Lawrence from the 6th season of "Project Runway" - to be honest I barely remembered anything he did. I guess you have to make it to top five or be a totally insane crazy person to stick in my mind at this point! Which is a shame, because looking back he was quite talented! So it was exciting to see what he's been up to at NOVA Fashion Week. Even though he was born in Chicago and is always in NYC, he considers DC to be his "third home." Perhaps because the Black Fashion Museum in DC named him Apparel Designer of the Year in 2002. And did you know he used to work for upcoming big deal Gary Graham???

Miss and Mrs Virgina were there, complete with crowns and sashes, and two women who looked like they had wandered off the set of the Real Housewives of New Jersey and wore almost matching white dresses and leopard print coats. Ummm, why would you do that??The collection was created specially for NOVA Fashion Week, and had a futuristic tribal inspiration, with an homage to Grace Jones. Lots of bright colors and fabulous styling! Though I don't know if I found his collection cohesive enough, particularly the womenswear. Some of the items seemed quite girly and some very crisp tomboy. What do you think?

I managed to snag him after the show for a brief interview:

In your words, what was your inspiration for this collection?
This based a narrative of the 80's / 70's time frame.... basically I thought of Grace Jones. So that whole super androgyny, empowered femininity. I wanted to take that and twist that into modern day, like Nicki Minaj. I wanted to take it to a whole other level with a futuristic twist. So, as you can see there's a lot of feminine details, flowy fabrics. But it's mixed with hard prints and masculine silhouettes. And for the men, it's a bit of a juxtaposition. It's all about really great tailoring, but in quirky ways. So like the light, feminine colors, like fuchsia, or a luxe fabrication like a Jacquard.

Great! You seem to have a lot of ideas, how would you describe your design process?
Crazy, ahaha. I kinda get an idea in the back of me head - and it can be from anything: a song, a color, a building - and it sticks there. And I wonder, how can I take that and expand it? So I take it and work on color palettes, I start sketching, I like to throw things together. For me, it's a bit of a chaotic journey, but that's part of the fun and the process.
I have to ask, how was being on "Project Runway." How did it impact your life and work?It was a great experience, it gave a platform to showcase my designs with a broader audience. But it's also about challenging yourself. Before I saw myself as a great designer, but it really taught me that I can push myself further and further if I just give myself the opportunity to do that. I also got to meet some great people, we have this little family of designers. Overall it was a fun, but stressful experience.
One last question, what do you think is next for you? What are your big goals for the future?I plan on taking the fashion world, mwahaha!! Well, I'm already working on fall 2011, so hopefully I'll be showcasing part of that back here in the area. And just moving forward - every day is a journey.

IFB Tweet Up With Mr. Mickey

AMEX & IFB hosted two tweet-ups during fashion week, and I was lucky enough to go to the one with the amazing Mr. Mickey - Mickey Boardman, founder Paper Magazine! Hopefully you know who he is, as he is one of my Who's Who of Fashion Week. It's always funny to go to tweet ups since everyone has to pause after each question in order to tweet what we just talked about, ahah.Long quiet pause...Here are some of my tweets, it was really interesting! Funny, I was sitting next to him before it started and barely managed to say anything, but once I was "officially" allowed to talk I asked three times as many questions as everyone else, including:

V: "You're known for helping discover/mentor Julia Frakes; What makes someone stand out to you?"
MB: "You can't just have a cute outfit - You need to have a unique voice to stand out today... but a cute outfit doesn't hurt!"
V: "What are some upcoming indie designers we should all know?"
MB: "SUNO was amazing, and I like that they are ethical / eco-friendly. Also Preen, Mandy Coon and threeasfour"
V: "You studied fashion design at Parsons, do you ever plan on creating you own collection?"
MB:"Actually, Opening Ceremony has approached me to do a collaboration of sparkly things, I may be the next Chloƫ Sevigny!"
Jennine was there looking amazing as usual, I am so going to get glasses like hers next because I'm a total copycat! :O

Meeting Rachel Roy

It's been a fashion-filled past couple of days for me! Rachel Roy came to DC Metro area over the weekend to promote her diffusion label, Rachel Rachel Roy, which is sold on her site and at Macy*s. With clothing, shoes, jewelry and purses all retailing for under $250, RRR has quickly become my go-to place to look for on-trend, affordable pieces!

I was already planning to attend the event, but was thrilled when I was invited to actually interview the designer herself! When I arrived, there was already a forever long line of people waiting for autographs, fun music was playing and there were complimentary refreshments circulating about. Models were rocking her latest designs, one was even wearing the studded heels I had posted last week!
Almost three hours into her meeting and greeting she took a few minute break to speak with me. Up close I was slightly blown away by her glowy beauty and dazzling smile. It would be easy to hate her if she didn't work so hard and wasn't so impossibly nice - that's right she's one of those beautiful, talented, super sweet people that makes the rest of us look bad. Cut that out, will ya?

Talking about what inspired her to partner with Macy's to create Rachel Rachel Roy, she says that she always wanted to create a line for "the younger sister" for the shoppers of her designer, ready-to-wear line. She goes on saying, "This was the girl that I used to be or the girl that I aspired to be when I was a bit younger. Where I grew up Macy's was the fanciest department store in my city and the idea that what I'm doing can transfer down into a different price point means a lot to me, since I was that young girl who read Vogue but couldn't afford anything in Vogue." Sigh, I'm still pretty much there. "I guess I'm trying my best to respect my customer and give her good, on-trend product inspired by the runways."

As for this most recent Spring / Summer RRR collection, Rachel was inspired by a girl who was "Parisian traveling through Africa." A combination of her chic aesthetic with tie dye and ethnic prints, and flowy silhouettes resulted in an uber-tempting collection with items that fit into summer trends while remaining wearable season after season!
As for what's next, I hope I planted the idea of a dog accessory line, I would definitely snatch up RRR dog carriers, collars, bowls and beds! And, even though I swore I would never dress my pup even, I would love doggy clothes too! Rachel thought it was "such a cute idea!" so here's hoping ;) She asked to see a picture of my own doggie, but I was using my phone as a recorder. Also on the plate would have to be a line for little girls, since she has two of her own, and beauty. She's "a big fan of make-up and how that can transform you."

Finally, as a blogger I was obligated to ask her about how she felt social media and fashion could work together. Her company already does such an amazing job, heck this lowly blogger had a chance to interview her! She says "it's such a smart way to connect with you customers! I get instant feedback, so I hear when something works and when something doesn't work, I hear what they like and I get ideas from them. They can also get more information on me and just get to know me and what's important to me." Rachel does a lot of work giving back to the community, you should check out her Charity = Clarity Program and her work with OrphanAid Africa.

Once I shut of my phone recorder, Rachel actually asked to see a picture of my dog again, isn't that just the sweetest? You'll be pleased to know she totally cooed over Kyoko, thus making her the most awesome design ever ;)

Follow her on Twitter and Like her Facebook page today!

Christopher Straub Interview & Project Runway Video Game

Always wanted to be a contestant on Project Runway? Well, now you can see if you have what it takes, because Atari recently released the Project Runway video game for Wii and PC. Stay tuned, because in an upcoming post, Vyque and I are going to play the game and find out if we should quit our day jobs and apply for the next season of Project Runway or if we will receive a swift "auf weidersehen" from Heidi Klum. Not only that, but you'll have the chance to win your very own copy of the game and see if you can, ahem, "make it work."

In the meantime, we were thrilled to have the opportunity to speak to Season 6 contestant, Christopher Straub, who designed a fabulous dress made entirely from the Project Runway game packaging:

Have you played the Project Runway game yet?

CS: No I have not played yet, I am so eager to. It’s actually in the mail right now. I should be getting it today and once it arrives I’ll be tearing it open and seeing if I can be successful at the game. It will be fun.

How did you become involved with creating the dress for the game?

CS: I was approached by Atari, the maker of the game, to do something that would combine a challenge from the show but also relate back to the game, and on the show I was successful with using paper and other unconventional materials. So we put our brains together and thought let's do a dress made out of the packaging for the game.

Was it hard to create the dress out of the packaging or was it pretty easy after all those crazy project runway challenges?

CS: I personally would rather making something out of paper than make something out of silk. I like working with unique materials, and I could incorporate my style more in something wacky and so that suited me to a tee. I’ll do weird things like that for the rest of my life. That totally makes me happy. So it was truly a challenge for me. I was so eager to do it.

How was the dress used to promote the game?

CS: I flew it to New York. It traveled in a box as tall as I am, because it’s a full length gown, and it walked the red carpet at an event for the launch of the video game. Vanessa Fitzgerald from "Models of the Runway", our season, wore the dress.

How did being on the show change your life or open up any new opportunities?

CS: Yeah, truly fourteen weeks on television isn't bad for anybody. It gets your name out there and gets people familiar with your name and your style, and I’ve been able to take that and develop a collection of handbags and accessories that I’ve been selling since the show premiered. I’ve been on ShopNBC, the home shopping network, and I sell myself my stuff online at my website, christopherstraub.com and I have a new spring collection coming out and soon apparel is going to follow. I started with the handbags and accessories because fitting is so hard, especially if you are buying online, so I make pieces that it doesn’t matter if you are a 2 or a 22. Every woman needs a handbag and a wallet.

Are you going to be selling the apparel on your website as well?

Yes, I will have the apparel on there as well, and they are going to be silhouettes that women can relate to. They’re not going to be evening gowns, there are going to be some day pieces but also some sportswear like hooded sweaters and unique pieces like some embellished tees too. And wraps for spring.

How difficult was it to design and create those outfits on such a short deadline?

CS: The reality is that that the contestants on the show are so much more than just designers. They’re designers, they’re sketch artists, they’re pattern makers, they’re tailors, they’re stylists. It is truly challenging just to be in that situation, but for me, the way I work, when I would get a challenge I would lock down an idea and I would just do that idea. I didn’t waiver, and if I got some criticism or when I got my critique I would edit from there, but I would never scrap my outfit as much as some of the other designers did. They started over at the last minute. I am able to commit to a design, and that’s a big challenge on the show. To just kind of believe in yourself and do what you think is right.

To do that, and then to be judged at such a high profile is very impressive.

CS: A lot of people say, I can’t believe they didn’t give you more straight up feedback. It was all just either positive or negative. And I tell people, well you know, you’ve got to keep in mind, this is a TV show, this isn’t school. If you were in fashion school, I’m sure you’d get the full range of what you could do to improve, what you’ve done to succeed, and all the technical parts of it, but bottom line, its entertainment. So all of us that were on the show, we understand that we’re putting ourselves in the most public situation that we have ever been in, and personally for me, that was the huge risk, as a budding designer, to put yourself in a place where the possibility of ruining your fashion career existed. But the other side was that it could create a demand for your pieces.

That being said, how did Project Runway shape you as a designer?

CS: Well, before the show, I hadn’t had much training, but I also hadn’t put myself out there as much as other designers. I live in Minnesota and there is a lot of talent here, but I wasn’t part of that community; that fashion community, and now, I’m part of it, and a big part of it. So, it’s interesting that I came from relative obscurity to what Minnesota fashion might be some day. Incorporating my style and getting other designers on board with large scale projects like this.

Do you still keep in touch with any of the contestants from Season 6?

CS: A couple of them, mostly Ramon, Carol Hannah and Logan. For me, this was a such an odd moment in life where we shared this experience, and so I have this bond with everyone that was on the show, because you can never share that with somebody else, like it’s such a unique bizarre moment in our lives, and I feel this kinship to everybody on the show, but there are some that I had more in common with and some that I just relate to more, and that was those three.

What about the current season? Have you been watching it?

CS: Oh yeah! I’ve blogged about it for realitywanted.com. It’s a reality show website, actually, casting directors go to that site and post their new projects. There’s an online group that are looking to get on a reality show, so they go and check out all the castings. So its for new projects like, I want to be a, you know, whatever…a construction worker…I don’t know; to all the dating shows to Project Runway and American Idol. They just do a lot of posting about where you can find these applications for reality shows. So, I blog about the most current Project Runway Season for that.

Other than the dress for the game, do you have any current or future endeavors you’d like to talk about?

CS: Yeah, currently I am creating a collection for my premiere fashion show in April in the Twin Cities. April 25th at Saint Paul Hotel. So, I am feverishly creating pieces and doing model casting, looking at the venue, and working with sound and light people, and the hair and makeup people, trying to put that together. So that’s kind of my big project right now. Also, I’m developing another collection for ShopNBC, the home shopping network, and hopefully in either the spring or fall those pieces will premiere on there as well.

Anything else you’d like to add about the Project Runway video game?

CS: Its really cool because it puts you in the role of the fashion designer, and you compete like you’re on the show. You're given different challenges, and you create designs, choose your model, but you also get to style the hair and style the makeup. Then you become the model and you strut down the catwalk with your Wii remote and balance board. So that’s really cool too, it’s not just designing, you actually get to be the model, which is going to be fun. I hope a bunch of YouTube videos come up of, like, Grandpa up there on the Wii Fit walking as his model. So that will be super, super fun. You get to design your own fashion line or you get to tackle unique Project Runway challenges. So it’s going to be really exciting to see what everyone’s favorite part of the game is because I think there is going to be a lot going on and you’ll really have a lot of options which will keep you busy for a long time.

I can’t wait to see how I am a part of this. I know that in the game, I am, like, a mentor. I play myself and act like a mentor to the aspiring designers that are playing the game. So it will be interesting to see how they input the footage that they have, because there wasn’t anything, like, they put me in front of the green screen with the dots all over me. I think they are using existing photo and video, so that will be fun to see how the designers are utilized in the game.

That’s definitely something worth getting a Wii for, seeing yourself in a video game.

CS: Yeah. Out of everything that I thought would happen after the show, being part of a video game was not expected. But what boy didn’t grow up wanting to be in a video game? So I’m so, so, so, happy for this opportunity.
